What is a kuudere? They are the chill and cool ones in the dere-spectrum. Often, you will find that their favorite line is simply, “…”. Though they are often void of expression, these blank faces are nothing more than masks that hide what they’re really feeling.

Sakaki (Azumanga Daioh)

No one ever really knows what Sakaki is thinking. This tall beauty is generally straight-faced… until something cute catches her eye! The real Sakaki loves to gush over all things kawaii, especially cats (often at the risk of her own health).

Makoto Sunakawa (My Love Story!!)

Suna is gentle, kind, and quiet: the perfect contrast to his over-the-top best friend, Takeo. On the rare occasion when Suna DOES laugh or smile, it’s usually in direct reference to something ridiculous Takeo did. Keep it cool, Suna.

Sakura Mamiya (RIN-NE)

Sakura’s general response to all the ghosts, demons, and shinigami shenanigans around her is a simple, “Ah.” She’s pretty inexpressive, often making our hero Rinne very nervous when he can’t tell what she’s thinking. Is she mad? Scared? Happy? Who knows?

Chino Kafu (Is the Order a Rabbit?)

Chino might come off as too serious for her age, but that just makes her little smile all the more precious. Her range of expressions run from annoyance to contentment, but for the most part, she’s going to regard most of her friends and customers with the same blank look.

Mei Misaki (Another)

Of course the scary girl with the eyepatch is a kuudere. Despite her ominous verbiage, house full of dolls, and the ability to sneak silently about, Mei is a kind soul. Even with the world crumbling and the curse closing in, Mei still tries to maintain her distance to keep the others safe.  

Lelei La LaLena (GATE)

Minus the part when Lelei goes to town killing a dragon, her face is generally impassive. Frighteningly intelligent, she’s often seen as the voice of reason in the group, despite being the youngest. However, she does tend to smile when her head is pat… just a little.

Hozuki (Hozuki’s Coolheadedness)

It’s amazing that Hozuki can keep a coolhead despite all the madness going on around him. He is, after all, a high ranking agent in hell. How he stays chill when his managers and subordinates are completely ridiculous is beyond us. Share your kuudere wisdom with us, Hozuki!
